Former Winnsboro High School basketball standout Stacy Stephens has been named the interim head women’s basketball coach for Our Lady of the Lake University, the school announced.
Stephens went to Our Lady of the Lake in 2017 to join Christopher Minner’s staff. Minner left at the end of May after seven years at the helm to be an assistant coach at the University of North Texas.
As a player, Stephens helped lead Winnsboro to state titles in 1999 and 2000. She then went to the University of Texas, where she was a two-time All-American.
Stephens was a third-round pick in the 2004 WNBA Draft by the Houston Comets. She also played professionally in Portugal, Sweden and Turkey.
Stephens started her coaching career at Colorado State University as the director of basketball operations. She was then an assistant at Cisco College before coming to Tyler as an assistant at Texas College.
Stephens went back to her alma mater as a special assistant for Texas from 2012-14.
Between Texas and Our Lady of the Lake, Stephens spent three years as an assistant coach at Sam Houston State University.
The Saints are coming off of a 28-7 season that ended in a trip to the NAIA national semifinals.
