LaDarren Williams nearly shattered the backboards, racking up a double-double and three crowd-pleasing dunks as Texas College battered Huston-Tillotson 90-49 Thursday at Gus F. Taylor.

Williams tabulated 19 points and 11 rebounds as the Steers stifled the winless Rams with their transition game.

Texas College used a double-double from Shirley McGowen to nudge Huston-Tillotson 71-70 in the women’s game.

In the nightcap, the Steers responded to an early 5-0 deficit with 25 consecutive points, taking a 50-21 lead into the intermission.

Wendell Maye netted 18 points to go with six rebounds and five assists. Maye produced nine points during the 25-0 run.

Maye teamed with Williams for an electrifying start to the second half. Maye, a 6-3 junior off-guard from Daphne, Ala., notched one of his five steals on the way to a dunk to start a three-minute stretch of highlight-worthy plays.

Williams cleaned up a missed shot, taking the rebound out the air for a two-handed jam to make it 64-21. On the next trip down court Jamal Robertson lobbed a pass high to Williams, who jumped to get the ball and turn backwards for a reverse alley-oop finish.

Robertson located Williams once again — on the left side for a lob pass leading to a two-handed stuff — to make it 68-28. Williams, a 6-8 senior forward from Arlington, connected on 8 of 11 shots from the floor.

Robertson, a junior point guard from Dallas, finished with 13 points and five assists as the Steers (15-9, 11-7 in Red River Athletic Conference) captured their eighth win in the last nine games.

The Steers outscored the Rams (0-24, 0-20) by a 22-0 margin on fastbreak points.

All 14 players in uniform played, with TC’s reserves combining for 33 points.

In the women’s game McGowen, a guard from Houston, totaled 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Lady Steers.

Dallas natives Myesha Carrington (13 points) and Keyara Criner (12 points, nine rebounds) provided much-needed support as the Lady Steers (8-15, 8-10) improved to 4-2 over their last six games.

The Lady Steers surged to a 14-point lead early in the second half with nine straight points — six from McGowen and three at the free throw line from Carrington.

TC held a 12-point cushion at the 3:24 mark and led by nine with 40 seconds left before holding on.

Rebounding saved the Lady Steers, who scored 14 second-chance points and received four boards or more from seven different players.
