UT Tyler sweeps rare tripleheader

What was originally planned as a single, nine-inning game on the schedule turned into a rare tripleheader Friday night at Irwin Field.

The threat of heavy rain in the Tyler area on Saturday pushed all three games between UT Tyler and Arlington Baptist to Friday.

The Patriots didn’t mind too much, scoring three wins in one night of baseball with 5-4, 19-0 and 16-9 victories.

Will Allen and Aaron McCain carried the load in the nightcap, combining for eight hits, two homers and nine RBIs for the Patriots (5-1).

Allen, a former Arp High School and Tyler Junior College standout, was 4 for 4 with a home run, two doubles, two steals and five RBIs. McCain’s leadoff homer in the bottom of the first began the scoring for the Patriots. He finished the game 4 for 5 with four runs and four RBIs.

Eight other UT Tyler batters collected hits in the Patriots’ 16-hit attack.

In the second game, the Patriots used a seven-run second inning to spark the rout.

Allen doubled twice and drove in three runs to lead UT Tyler. T.J. Martin also had three RBIs.

The pitching trio of Brian Shore (1-0), Cody Jones and Robert E. Lee graduate Derek Miller were dominating, allowing just three hits with 11 strikeouts in seven innings.

Five of the first six outs Shore recorded came via the strikeout. He finished the night with seven Ks in four innings.

In the first game, the Patriots jumped out to a 5-0 lead before holding on in the final two innings.

Issac Tijerina, a transfer from Texas Lutheran, had two hits and drove in three runs for UT Tyler.

Athens native Jack Barkley (2-0) earned the win, allowing three runs on five hits in 5 1-3 innings. At one point, the sophomore retired 13 consecutive batters before running into trouble in the sixth.

Arlington Baptist scored three times in the inning, but stranded runners at second and third when UT Tyler reliever Jacob Yanker, a former Robert E. Lee standout, induced a groundout to end the inning.

Yanker worked himself into a jam in the top of the seventh by allowing a run and putting the potential tying and go-ahead runs on base. But Parker Sheets came in and recorded a one-out save by forcing a groundout to end the game.

UT Tyler returns to action Monday and Tuesday with home games against Castleton State. Both games are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. The Patriots end their 11-game homestand to begin the season with a three-game series next weekend against Concordia-Texas.
