CLINTON, Miss. — The No. 6-ranked UT Tyler softball team split a doubleheader with Mississippi College on Friday in an American Southwest Conference doubleheader.
The Lady Choctaws handed the Patriots their first loss of the season in game 1, 2-1. The Patriots bounced back in game 2 for a 1-0 win.
The Patriots (10-1, 7-1) and Lady Choctaws (5-4, 4-4) play again at 1 p.m. today.
In the first game, the Lady Choctaws’ Macy Lee ended the game with a walk-off single in the seventh inning.
UT Tyler’s Whitney Burt got the scoring started in the second with a RBI-single, scoring Lauren Robenalt.
Mississippi College tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, as Brooke Smitherman knocked in Shay Mickens with a RBI-single of her own, tying the game at 1-1.
In the seventh, the Patriots retired the first two MC batters, but Megan Everett and Mickens singled, followed by a Smitherman walk.
With two outs and the bases loaded, Lee became the hero, singling in Everett for the 2-1, walkoff-win.
In the second game, Burt doubled in the top of the first inning, and later scored on a Vanessa Carrizales fielder’s choice, making the score 1-0.
It would be the only score of the game, as UT Tyler pitcher Alaina Kissinger was dominant in the circle, going seven full innings, allowing two hits and striking out seven.
Burt would finish the game going 2 for 4 with one run scored to lead the Patriots.
