CLAREMONT, Calif. — UT Tyler sophomore Buck Thompson placed fifth in the discus at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Thompson, a former Winona High School standout, threw 52.64 meters (172 feet, 8½ inches).

Carter Comito of Whitworth (Wash.) won with a toss of 57.86 meters (189-10).

Thompson will compete in the shot put today. He is the first-ever multi-event qualifier for the Patriots.

Thompson qualified with a 16.51 meters (54-2) throw in the shot put at the Incarnate Word Last Stand Meet in San Antonio. At the same meet, he had a 53.43 (175-3½) discus throw to qualify in that event as well.

For each men’s individual event contested, including the decathlon, the top 20 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition by the NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Committee.

Thompson was the American Southwest Conference’s Male Track and Field Athlete of the Week for March 16-17 and won the ASC Championship in the discus while finishing second in the shot put.

Thompson won the Class 2A shot put championship in 2008 while competing with Winona High School with a toss of 57-7¾.
