CLAREMONT, Calif. — UT Tyler sophomore Buck Thompson placed 16th in the shot put at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday.

Thompson, a former Winona High School standout, had a distance of 15.65 meters (51 feet, 4¼ inches). Paul Davis of McMurry won the event with a distance of 18.55 meters (60-10½).

On Thursday, Thompson placed fifth in the discus with a distance of 52.64 meters (172 feet, 8½ inches).

He is the first-ever multi-event qualifier for the Patriots.

Thompson qualified with a 16.51 meters (54-2) throw in the shot put at the Incarnate Word Last Stand Meet in San Antonio. At the same meet, he had a 53.43 (175-3½) discus throw to qualify in that event as well.

For each men’s individual event contested, including the decathlon, the top 20 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition by the NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Committee.

Thompson was the American Southwest Conference’s Male Track and Field Athlete of the Week for March 16-17 and won the ASC Championship in the discus while finishing second in the shot put.

Thompson won the Class 2A shot put championship in 2008 while competing with Winona High School with a toss of 57-7¾.
