UT Tyler’s Derek Miller has been named the American Southwest Conference East Division Pitcher of the Week, the league office in Richardson announced Tuesday.
The senior right-hander from Tyler, last season’s ASC leader in saves, earned saves in the first two games of the 2013 season, totaling two shutout innings without allowing a hit or walk. Miller also struck out a combined four batters in a 3-1 win over Rogers State and a 3-0 contest against Tabor during play in the Dallas Christian Baseball Festival at Reverchon Park.
Last season, Miller was named All-ASC after leading the conference with nine saves. He is a former Robert E. Lee and Tyler Junior College standout.
The Patriots (2-1) have their home opener Friday at Irwin Field against ASC West rival Mary Hardin-Baylor. Friday’s game is scheduled for 6 p.m., with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
The hitter of the week was LeTourneau freshman Dillon Yates.
The catcher from Waxahachie was 5 for 12 with two home runs and six RBIs to fuel a season-opening, three-game sweep over Southwestern. Yates also scored six runs, walked once and stole a base. He had at least one RBI in each game and connected for a game-tying, two-run single in the final inning of an eventual 6-5 win.
