A series usually reserved for the final weekend of the regular season begins Friday, featuring traditional American Southwest Conference East Division powers UT Tyler and Mississippi College.
The three-game series begins at 6 p.m. tonight from Frierson Field in Clinton, Miss. It concludes with a doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday.
In each of the past four seasons, the Patriots and Choctaws have met at the end of the season with the East Division title on the line. And in 2009 and 2010, UT Tyler defeated Mississippi College in the championship game of the ASC tournament.
This year, the series winner will get an early jump on the division race.
The Patriots (12-3) have won the first four games of their current eight-game road trip, rebounding from a doubleheader sweep suffered against Concordia-Texas two weeks ago. UT Tyler swept a three-game series at Schreiner last weekend.
Parker Sheets earned ASC East Co-Pitcher of the Week honors after tossing eight scoreless innings in his first start of the season in the series finale against Schreiner. For the year, Sheets (1-0) has a 1.06 ERA and two saves in 17 innings.
Jack Barkley leads the staff with a 4-0 record. His 2.81 ERA is second-best, behind only Sheets.
Hayden Chick leads UT Tyler at the plate with a .490 average, one homer and 13 RBIs. Aaron McCain is second on the team with a .351 mark, but leads the team in homers (two) and RBIs (15).
Mississippi College (6-9) dropped two of three to Sul Ross State last weekend, but did manage a 36-9 win in the series. The 36 runs were the second most scored in ASC history.
The Choctaws are led at the plate by Spencer Brunson, who is batting .370 with two homers and 15 RBIs.
