UT Tyler athletes will be quite busy this weekend with soccer, volleyball, cross country and golf on tap. 

Cross Country

The annual UT Tyler Invitational is scheduled for Saturday on the UT Tyler campus. The meet includes colleges and high schools. It all gets under way at 7:30 a.m.

The Patriots teams are fresh off competing in the Baylor Twilight Invitational last week in Waco.

Texas A&M won the men’s meet with 25 points, followed by Baylor (40), Abilene Christian (98), Dallas Baptist (109), Incarnate Word (124) and UT Tyler (129).

Senior Ross Renfroe (Tyler/Grace Community) led the way for the men’s team by finishing 10th overall with a time of 19 minutes and 21 seconds in the 6K race.  Fellow senior Jeff Chandler (Longview/Spring Hill) finished 34th overall with a 20:21.1 clocking.

C.J. Brown, a junior at A&M, won the meet with a time of 18:36.5.

Overall, the Patriots finished with a total time of 1:41:50 and an average of 20:22.10 per racer.

The Patriot women finished seventh with 195 points. Baylor won with 17 points, followed by Texas State (75), Texas A&M (82), Dallas Baptist (111), Incarnate Word (117) and Abilene Christian (145).

UT Tyler was led by junior Ginny Murphy (Ovilla/Ovilla Christian) who finished the women’s 4K race with a time of 17:19.  Sophomore Missy Herbert (Hudson) finished second among the Patriot racers with a time of 17:27.

The women’s team finished with a total team time of 1:28:37.80 and an average of 17:43.56 per racer.

Cate Westenhover of Baylor won the women’s race with a time of 14:06.3.

Kate Mohr, the former Whitehouse star and a freshman at Texas A&M, finished 28th with a time of 15:25.8. 


The Patriot volleyball team is off to a smashing start.

On Tuesday, UT Tyler opened American Southwest Conference East Division play with a 3-1 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton.

The Patriots beat the Lady Cru, 25-18, 25-14, 17-25, 25-13.

UT Tyler improved to 4-1 overall, while UMHB dropped to 1-2.

Stacey Wilson (freshman, Granbury) led the way for the Patriots with 16 kills and Danika Waldrep (senior, Arlington/Fort Worth Nolan Catholic) also reached double figures with 13. Emily Wood (freshman, Waller) had 28 digs and Madison Kosir (freshman, Magnolia) had 16 assists for UT Tyler.

The Patriot volleyball team opened its season over the weekend by going 3-1 at the Hendrix Warrior Invitational in Conway, Ark.

Outside hitter Waldrep led the Patriots with 66 kills in the four games, including 30 kills against Williams Baptist to set a new school record.

In the first match, the Patriots swept Central Baptist, 25-14, 25-15, 25-11. Waldrep led the team with 12 kills, while Wood posted 15 digs and five service aces.

UT Tyler lost its next match against Williams Baptist in five sets by scores of 25-19, 23-25, 19-25, 24-19, 20-18.  Wood recorded 30 digs in the losing effort in support of Waldrep’s record breaking match.

The Patriots rebounded from the loss by sweeping LeTourneau, 25-11, 25-15, 25-22.  Kosir recorded 29 assists and Wilson finished with a 33 percent kill mark.

UT Tyler wrapped up the tournament by knocking off host Hendrix, 3-1. The Patriots lost the first set, 15-25, but rebounded to win the remaining sets, all by scores of 25-12. UT Tyler recorded 52 kills in the match, with Kosir and Waldrep leading the way with 15 and 14 kills, respectively.

The Patriots will take part in the Austin College Classic on Friday and Saturday in Sherman. They will play Dallas Christian (2 p.m.) and Southwestern Assemblies of God (6 p.m.) on Friday; and University of Dallas (1 p.m.) and Ouachita Baptist (5 p.m.) on Saturday. 


The UT Tyler men are home Thursday and Saturday, while the UT Tyler women hit the road.

The Patriots (1-1) play host to LSU-Shreveport at 7 p.m. Thursday and Northwood at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Both matches are scheduled for Citizens 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex.

The Patriot women (1-1) have a two-game swing to Central Texas, On Friday, UT Tyler plays Southwestern in Georgetown (2 p.m.) and on Sunday the Patriots meet Trinity in San Antonio (noon). 


The Patriots will take part in the Tyler Junior College Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at Oak Hurst Golf Course in Bullard.

It will be the opening tournament for the Patriots.
