A come from behind win by the UT Tyler men’s soccer team capped off an American Southwest Conference doubleheader against Howard Payne at Citizen’s 1st Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex. The men’s team defeated the Yellow Jackets 3-2, after the women’s 2-0 win earlier Saturday afternoon.
Charity Shipman’s sixth minute goal in the women’s contest proved to be all the Patriots needed in the first game of the doubleheader. Jordan Johnson’s initial shot was saved by Lady Jackets’ keeper Adrienne Walker. The save rebounded to Shipman, who put it in the net.
The Patriots held possession most of the half and nearly scored off a free kick with eight minutes left in the half. Kristen Steele, however, gave the Patriots a 2-0 in the 43rd minute. Caitlin Cronin picked up the assist on the play.
Howard Payne saw its best chance at a goal barely miss. Leslie Jones created some space and took a shot that hit off the crossbar.
Emily Bechdol nearly put the Patriots up 3-0 with around four minutes to play. Her shot rocketed straight into the arms of Howard Payne goalkeeper Kaitlyn Kelm, a Lindale native.
UT Tyler managed to run out the rest of the clock and win its fourth game of the season. The Patriots improved to 3-1 in ASC play. Howard Payne fell to 2-1 in conference play.
The following game began with Howard Payne making all the plays. Eight minutes into play Jaime Benitez scored from outside the box to give the Yellow Jackets an early lead.
The Patriots had success moving the ball into Howard Payne territory, but no luck creating space to get off a shot. The Patriots made 11 shots in the first half to the Yellow Jackets’ five.
Shane Cazad, Howard Payne’s leading scoring, showed off his powerful leg with a goal from 35 yards away. The shot from the left side of the field curved into the top right corner of the goal to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 lead.
UT Tyler kept attacking offensively, but failed to get anything past Howard Payne goal keeper Kyle Huesing and the Yellow Jackets defense.
The Patriots offense continued to wear down Howard Payne’s defense in the beginning of the second half. Taylor Nelson-Cook and Alberto Munoz created shots for UT Tyler several minutes into the half, but again with no luck.
UT Tyler’s offensive advances finally paid off in the 67th minute. Jake Urbaniak scored on a pass from Elijah Shipman to make it a one-goal game.
Three and a half minutes later the Patriots tied the game on a goal by Enoch Shipman. Jesus Morteo’s corner kick found Victor Almendariz, who passed it over to Shipman for the score.
The contest remained tied for nine minutes until Urbaniak scored his second goal of the game to give UT Tyler a 3-2 lead. Almendariz passed the ball into the box where Urbaniak finished the play off for his seventh goal of the season.
With the Yellow Jackets running on fumes, the Patriots ran out the clock for their sixth win of the season. They improved to 3-1 in ASC play. Howard Payne fell to 3-3 on the season, 1-2 in the conference.
The Patriots play their next two games on the road, beginning with Schreiner on Friday afternoon. They travel over to Seguin on Saturday to face Texas Lutheran.
Both teams return home Oct. 6 and Oct. 8 to face LeTourneau and East Texas Baptist.
