Tyler Junior College wanted to make sure they didn’t snooze on the final day of the annual Sleep Inn Basketball Classic.

Both the Apache Ladies and Apaches were wide awake en route to two big wins on Saturday at Wagstaff Gymnasium.

The Apache Ladies, behind sizzling free throw shooting, rolled to an 88-68 win over Collin County Community College.

In the men’s game, seven Apaches hit in double figures in a 106-69 win over the Stephen F. Austin Club team.

After dropping the first two games of the Classic, TJC coach Trenia Jones wanted her team to start early and finish fast.

The Apache Ladies (2-3) did just that, breaking out to a big lead and staying intense until the final buzzer.

Six Apache Ladies hit in doubles figures, led by Sernise Robertson’s 17 points.

Robertson was 11 of 11 from the free throw line as the Apache Ladies were a combined 34 of 40 from the charity stripe.

Carolina Lopez was next with 16 points, while Tayshia Hunt added 14. Rounding out the double digit scoring were Sierra Henry (11), Adrienne Phillips (10) and Bria Emanuel (10).

Traci Parks led the Lady Cougars (2-1) with 20 points, while De’Amber Brice added 12.

The Apache Ladies return to play on Wednesday, playing host to the Shreveport Sting at 7 p.m.

Leading only 58-57 in the second half, the Apaches got a wakeup call.

TJC (3-1) used its speed along with its superior size and height to outscore the Lumberjacks 48-12 in the final 14 minutes of the game.

Trevor Berkeley and DeAndre Harris led the Apaches with 15 points apiece, while Dale Jones (14), Daniel Edozie (13) and Ta’Jon Welcome (12) were next in line.

Sharife Sargeant and Winslo Barry added 10 points each for TJC.

SFA Club, which drained 11 3-pointers, was led by Jamal North’s 20 points. Shondrick Chase (14) and Daverick Hunt (10) were also in double figures.

TJC returns to play on Tuesday, playing host to Northwestern State JV at 6 p.m.
