LUBBOCK - Trinity Valley did not get off to the best of starts Thursday at the Rip Griffin Center in its NJCAA Division I women’s quarterfinal matchup against Salt Lake (Utah).

The Lady Cardinals missed their first four shots and had a turnover to trail 7-0 with two minutes elapsed.

No. 6 seed Trinity Valley took over from that point and never trailed again, defeating No. 3 Salt Lake 63-54.

TVCC (30-3) advances to the semifinals against No. 2 seed Shelton State (Ala.) at 7 p.m. Friday at Rip Griffin.

Shelton State (33-1) won its quarterfinal 69-67 over ASA New York.

Maya Singleton scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead TVCC with Christalah Lyons scoring 14 and Naomi Davenport adding 12 for the Lady Cardinals.

Salt Lake was paced by 19 points from Tilar Clark and 14 from Iva Georgieva.

After their sluggish start, the Lady Cardinals blazed past Salt Lake to finish the first period on a 16-5 run. TVCC then outscored Salt Lake 25-10 in the second period to establish a 41-22 halftime advantage.

Salt Lake provided a surge of its own in the second, slicing TVCC’s lead to five points three different times, but the Lady Cardinals wouldn’t allow SL to get any closer.
