ATHENS - The Tyler Junior College basketball teams travel west to take on the No. 1-ranked Trinity Valley Community College squads on Wednesday.

The women play at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men at 7:30 p.m. on Leon Spencer Court in Cardinal Gym.

In the opener, the No. 1 Lady Cardinals (16-1, 8-0) tangle with the No. 13 Apache Ladies (17-2, 7-2).

The Apache Ladies are led by 6-2 freshman Sky’lynn Holmes, who is averaging a double-double (13.5 points, 11.2 rebounds). The former Pine Tree High School star is the only TJC player in double figures scoring. Ann Nwosah (6-0 sophomore post from Houston) is averaging 9.3 points and 5.7 rebounds. Guard Autumn Avina (5-6 sophomore guard from Round Rock) is scoring at 8.6 points a game, while averaging 2.4 assists and 1.3 steals.

For the Lady Cardinals, they have three players averaging in double figures scoring - Maya Singleton (12.9), Christalah Lyons (12.6) and Naomi Davenport (12.4).

Singleton actually has a higher rebounding average (13.0) than points, albeit a minuscule margin. Leah Mathis is second at 6.7.

The Lady Cardinals are averaging 16.8 assists per game. Assist leaders include Troi Swain (4.4), Lyons (4.2) and Davenport (2.6).

In the second game, the top-ranked Cardinals (19-1, 8-0) will be looking to avenge their 2015 regional loss to the Apaches (10-7, 2-7).

TJC defeated TVCC 81-65 in the Region XIV quarterfinals en route to the regional championship.

The Cards moved to No. 1 last week after Hutchinson (Kansas) lost a couple of games and dropped to No. 10.

TVCC has four players averaging in double figures and almost a fifth. Trinity Valley is led by Hyron Edwards (12.5 ppg), Josh Stamps (12.3), Leon Gilmore (11.3) and Josh Robinson (10.5). Nearing the magic mark is JC Washington at 9.6.

Gilmore leads in rebounds at 7.3, while Edwards is tops in assists at 5.2.

The Apaches have two freshmen averaging in double figures scoring - Kwinton Hinson (6-4 guard from Fairmont, North Carolina) at 12.5 points and Eden Ewing (6-8 forward from Houston) at 10.6. Sophomore Darryl Stewart (6-2 guard from Atlanta) is next at 10.1.

Ewing and TJ Thomas (6-8 forward from Atlanta) are both at 5.7 rebounds per game. Hinson averages 5.5 boards.

Ronnie Stacy, a 6-4 guard from Alexander City, Alabama, directs the club, averaging 9.1 points and 4.6 assists.

After Wednesday’s games, the TJC teams will be home on Saturday to meet Paris Junior College in a doubleheader. The women play at 2 p.m., followed by the men at 4 p.m.

The Trinity Valley women will play host to Coastal Bend on Saturday at 2 p.m., while the TVCC men travel to Corsicana to meet Navarro at 4 p.m.

I am a native Tylerite and I grew up reading the Tyler Morning Telegraph and The Tyler Courier-Times. My parents took both the morning and afternoon papers. I came to work here 35 years ago at the age of 23, right after college.
