The Tyler Junior College golfers started the fall season on a high note by capturing the TJC Fall Invitational at Pine Springs Golf Club on Tuesday.
The Apaches, led by four golfers in the top five, captured the top prize by six strokes over runner-up Murray State of Tishomingo, Oklahoma. Taking third was the TJC B squad. There were 11 teams playing in the 36-hole event on the 6,509 yard, par 72 course. The tourney began on Monday and concluded on Tuesday.
In the women's tourney, Murray State won the team crown, while TJC's Kimberley Beveridge earned medalist honors. There were three teams in the two-day tourney that was played on the 6,149 yard, par 72 course.
The Apaches carded a sterling 16-under 272 score on Tuesday to bolt past three teams to capture the championship. TJC had a 36-hole score of 22-under 554 after a first round total of 282.
Murray State was second at 16-under 560 (279-281). TJC's B team was third at 9-under 567 (281-286). Rounding out the top five were Murray State B (6-under 570) and Ranger College (even 576).
Joshua Shelley of Murray State won medalist honors with a 9-under 135 (66-69). The Aggie sophomore from England won by one stroke over TJC's Oliver White (69-67-136). White is a sophomore from Harrogate, England.
Tyler's Marco Maldonado, a sophomore from Diboll, was third at 6-under 138 (74-64). Maldonado had the best round of the tourney by carding an 8-under 64 on Tuesday.
TJC teammates Garrett White (67-72), a sophomore from Lindale, and Ethan Bozner, a freshman from Henderson, Nevada, (71-68) tied for fourth at 5-under 139. Ranger's Francisco Manzanilla (74-65) and Murray State's Reece Blair (66-73) also tied for fourth.
The Apache Ladies had just three players taking part and thus did not field the required four golfers to compete for the team title.
Beveridge, a sophomore from Aboyne, Scotland, won medalist honors with a 4-over 148 (71-77). Bethany Accy, of Murray State, was runner-up at 6-over 150 (76-74), followed by TJC's BoYoung Park with a 7-over 151 (79-72). Park is a sophomore from Incheon, South Korea.
LeTourneau's Stephanie Mobley (83-80) and Lauren Johnson (79-84) tied for fourth at 19-over 163.
TJC's Kristen Rogers (82-87) tied for eight at 25-over 169. Rogers is a freshman from Lucas Lovejoy High School.
In the team race, Murray State won with a score of 84-over 660, followed by LeTourneau (99-over 675) and Howard Payne (222-over 798).
SMOKE SIGNALS: The Apache Ladies volleyball team, ranked No. 15, returns to play on Wednesday, hosting Trinity Valley Community College at Wagstaff Gymnasium.
The contest has a 7 p.m. start.
TJC is 5-5 on the season and 0-1 in Region XIV play, while the Lady Cardinals are 14-2 and 1-0.
