SCOTTSBORO, Ala. — The Tyler Junior College men’s golf team improved its score by nine strokes but remained in 10th place on Wednesday at the NJCAA Division II National Golf Tournament at Goose Pond Colony Golf Course.
The Apaches fired a 291 for a two-day total of 593 to sit at 17-over. The tournament continues through Friday.
Day 1 leader South Mountain (Ariz.) pulled away from the pack with a 281 to hold a comfortable lead after the second round at 11-under. Second-place Walters (Tenn.) State sits at 1-over, with Owens (Ohio) one stroke back.
TJC, which is six strokes out of the top six, was led again by Conlan LaPorte, who moved up into a tie for ninth after firing a second straight 1-under 71.
David Keenan of Parkland (Ill.) maintained a three-stroke lead in the medalist race at 66-70—136 (8-under). Brandon Hoelzer of Owens is in second while Jake Argento and Will Twitty, both of South Mountain, are tied for third at 4-under.
Also competing for the Apaches were Tyler Terry (T22, 73-72—145), Chris Cotton (T64, 78-74—152), Cameron Lindell (T77, 80-74—154) and Kyle Booza (82-74—156).
