The Tyler Junior College men’s basketball team is looking for that elusive home conference win, while the Apache Ladies want to bounce back from an emotional loss.
Both have that opportunity today against Kilgore College in a Region XIV doubleheader at Wagstaff Gymnasium. The women tip off at 2 p.m. and the men start about 4 p.m.
The Apaches (9-5, 2-3 North) have defeated Panola and Bossier Parish on the road in league play, and lost to Navarro, Paris and Trinity Valley at home.
TJC had a three-point lead Wednesday against Trinity Valley with 4:13 remaining, but the Cardinals outscored the Apaches 15-7 to end the game and win 81-76.
Although the Apaches suffered an offensive drought late, they received good contributions from Chris Coleman (20 points, 8 rebounds), Trent Washington (18 points) and Jaron Johnson (16). Coleman, a 6-9 freshman post from Buffalo, N.Y., was 8 of 10 from the floor and 4 of 4 from the line.
The Apache Ladies (11-5, 3-2) had unbeaten Trinity Valley down 86-80 with 1:51 left in regulation before the No. 1 Lady Cardinals rallied for a 103-96 overtime victory.
TJC missed chances to maintain its lead by turning the ball over on three straight possessions. On the fourth series — and the score 86-86 — Markisha Hawkins drove toward the lane but had her shot blocked from behind by TVCC’s Alice Robinson.
The Lady Cardinals took command in overtime with a 9-1 run.
SMOKE SIGNALS: The Kilgore men (11-3, 3-1 North) are coming off a 70-68 loss to the Texas Riders in non-conference play, while the Lady Rangers (8-5, 2-2) won on the road against Angelina, 75-57. … TJC women’s coach Trenia Jones is 17-5 all-time against Kilgore, but the Lady Rangers have won four of the last six meetings. … TJC men’s coach Mike Marquis is 12-8 in the series. The teams have split the regular-season series the last two seasons.
