One good thing about a best-of-three series is that it's not over in one game if you are on the short end of the score.

That's how the TJC baseball team is looking at things after dropping an 8-7 decision to No. 8 Brookhaven College in the opening game of the NJCAA District C Super Regional baseball series on Thursday at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Mike Carter Field.

Game 2 is set for 1 p.m. Friday. If needed, a third game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday.

The winner of the regional advances to the NJCAA Division III World Series, which is scheduled for May 25-30 in Greeneville, Tennessee.

No. 6 TJC (40-19) has been to five straight national championship tournaments, winning four of those and finishing second in 2018.

After falling behind 1-0, the Bears (38-24) eventually built an 8-2 advantage thanks in part to a two-RBI single and an RBI double from CJ Lovato and a two-RBI single by Brett Wagner.

In the first inning, Michael Morissette singled to bring home Erik Owen, who had singled. In the third, TJC pulled within 3-2 when Heath Hood doubled and came home on Owen's base hit.

Fiver Trimble blasted a home run in the sixth to bring the Apaches to within 8-3.

TJC scored two runs in the eighth (Jacob Johnson's single drove in Trimble, who had doubled, and after Johnson stole second, he scored on Ty Meissner's single). Meissner tried to score on Hood's single, but was tagged out at the plate, leaving the Apaches down 8-5.

In the ninth, Miguel Vega hit a two-run homer (after Morissett singled) with two outs but that was as close as the Apaches could get.

Hood and Owen were both 3 for 5, while Morissette was 2 for 2 and Trimble was 2 for 5. Jacoby Bogue also had a single for the Apaches.

Sergio Esqueda led the Bears with a 3 for 5 day at the plate and scored three runs. Bryson Jolly added a double with Chris McGinty, Ruben Alcala, Tristin Marcus and Jordan Whitaker adding singles. Chase Cos also had an RBI.

Triston Dixon (8-4) got the win, going five innings and allowing five hits and two runs with three walks and four strikeouts.

Christian Grigsby (7-3) took the loss. He pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and six runs with three walks and four strikeouts.

Daylon Farmer pitched the final three innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
