LONGVIEW — Issac Tijerina had three hits and three RBIs, Aaron McCain homered, Jack Barkley remained perfect on the mound and No. 22 UT Tyler defeated LeTourneau, 7-2, Friday night in the opener of their three-game series.

The Patriots (26-8, 9-4 in American Southwest Conference) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings, but LeTourneau (13-19, 7-9) cut the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh.

UT Tyler responded by scoring a run in the eighth before putting the game away with a three-run ninth.

Barkley (9-0), who’s won nine of his 10 starts on the year, went six innings and allowed a run on six hits. He did not walk or strike out a batter.

Jacob Yanker allowed a run over three innings to pick up his first save of the year.

The two teams resume the series with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. today.

In Marshall, the UT Tyler softball team takes on East Texas Baptist. The first game of the DH is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. On Sunday, the two softball squads are scheduled to play at UT?Tyler Ballpark, with the first game slated for 3 p.m.
