MARSHALL — Texas College answered loud in its latest rebuttal of an ongoing and one-sided argument with arch-rival Wiley College.

Playing on the campus of the “Great Debaters,” Texas College continued its recent dominance, springing to life over the final 12 minutes to nab a defining 75-64 win over Wiley Monday at Alumni Gymnasium.

Wiley won a fast-paced, foul-filled women’s game 91-75 to sweep the season series with the Lady Steers.

The Steers swept Wiley for the third straight year, running their win-streak in the series to seven games.

Since former Texas College coach Andre Payne swapped sidelines, TC owns an 8-3 record over the Wiley mentor, winning eight of the last nine.

TC’s trio of LaDarren Williams, Jamal Robertson  and Wendell Maye made Wiley pay during a game-changing 26-4 run that started with TC behind six and ended with the Steers ahead 67-51.

Williams posted a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Robertson matched him with 18 points. Maye finished with 12 points, five rebounds and four assists as the Steers (9-8, 5-6 in Red River Athletic Conference) stopped the streaking Wildcats, who entered the contest 7-1 in their previous eight games.

With Wiley up 47-41, TC evened it with six straight before Williams converted a three-point play to give the Steers the lead for good.

Williams later knocked down treys on consecutive possessions then whipped a pass inside to Maye to put TC out front 60-48 with 7:49 remaining. The Steers stayed ahead by double digits the rest of the way.

Wiley, which started the week receiving votes in the national rankings, received a strong all-around game from Richard Simon (10 points, seven rebounds, six assists).

Women

Alieshia Carruthers carried Wiley down the stretch in the women’s game,  scoring 12 of her game-high 18 points over the last eight minutes. Carruthers canned 3-pointers during the stretch, including a momentum-breaking trey to make it 71-61 after TC trimmed a 16-point deficit to seven.

With TC still behind 10 late, Carruthers scored seven points in a 22-second span, including two money balls, to make it 85-68.

The Lady Wildcats are coached by former Ranger head coach and Tyler Junior College assistant Courtney Pruitt.

The Lady Wildcats pushed the ball repeatedly to finish with 28 fastbreak points.

The teams combined for 78 free throws, 58 fouls and a pair of technicals.

Shirley McGowen paced TC with 17 points while Cherisa Sellers added 14 points while going a perfect 7-for-7 from the field for the Lady Steers (3-13, 3-8).
