DALLAS — Just when a sweep seemed all but a finality, Texas College slipped up on a technicality.

Hamid Ford drained a dramatic, tie-breaking 19-footer with eight-tenths of a second left to put the Steers ahead 60-58. The ensuing Steer celebration warranted a technical foul, as did the disagreement from the Texas College bench, leading to five Paul Quinn free throws, and a shocking 63-60 win by the host school before an electrified home crowd Thursday the Tigers Den.

DeAndre Hayden hit for 26 points, including all four free throws after the two technicals issued on a stunned TC team. Following the inbound, Paul Quinn added a free throw before Phillip Burnett-Evans missed a 60-footer at the buzzer to end a rare turn of events.

The Steers (7-8, 3-6) suffered their fifth straight loss and dropped behind the Tigers (4-9, 3-5) in the league standings.

LaDarren Williams went for 16 points, six rebounds and three blocks to lead the Steers before fouling out near the three-minute mark.

Evans (15 points) knocked down TC’s 10th trey of the night for a two-point lead before Hayden scored on a put-back on one of  his 16 rebounds to tie the score, setting up Ford’s go-ahead shot from the corner near the TC bench.

Paul Quinn pulled out the win, in large part, to a free throw disparity, making 12 more foul shots and shooting 15 more than TC.

The Steers stormed into the intermission with an 11-point lead after Ford nailed a trey and Norman Stewart swished a 35-footer as the horn sounded.

TC closed strong in the women’s game, scoring seven of the last nine points for a 65-60 victory.

Dallas product Keyara Criner chalked up 12 of her 14 points over the final seven minutes, starting with a three-point play to put TC ahead for good (50-49) with 6:59 left.

Criner, who attended Samuell High school, scored 10 straight points and, following a pair of free throws by Shirley McGowen, blocked a shot and made a free throw for a four-point cushion (61-57).

The Lady Steers (3-11, 3-6) secured their third straight win thanks to strong games from Shirley McGowen (11 points, 10 rebounds), Sekeya Roberson (10 points, six assists, three steals) and Dallas native Myesha Carrington (10 points, two steals).

TC capitalized on power plays over the final two minutes with Paul Quinn forced to play shorthanded after one of only five players who dressed fouled out the game.
