Enoch Shipman’s goal in the 83rd minute propelled the UT Tyler men’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over LSU-Shreveport on Thursday night. The Patriots outshot the Pilots 29-3 at Citizen’s First Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex en route to their second win of the year.
UT Tyler commanded the ball throughout the entire game, but was kept off the scoreboard by several saves by Pilots goalkeeper Lance Quini. He made five saves in each half.
The Patriots attempted 13 shots in the first half to no avail. Jake Urbaniak, the reigning American Southwest Conference Defensive Player of the Year, came close to finding the net, but Quini was able to get a hand on the ball and knock it over the net.
UT Tyler again made an attempt to score off a corner kick with 30 minutes to play, but again a header was stopped by Quini. He also made another save just minutes later on shot by Elijah Shipman that was headed for the right corner of the goal.
His brother Enoch finally made the game deciding goal off another corner kick. Urbaniak made the initial attempt to score on a header, which was blocked. The block ball ricocheted off Erick Desantiago to Shipman, who knocked it just inside the left upright.
Patriots’ goalkeeper Sergio Gardea played all 90 minutes and made two saves. Urbaniak and Elijah Shipman led the team with seven shots apiece. Enoch, who shot four times in the contest, scored his first goal of the season with the game winner.
UT Tyler in back in action at 3 p.m. Saturday at Citizen’s First Bank-Perkins Soccer Complex to face Northwood University. The Patriots begin ASC play Sept. 16 against McMurry in Abilene.
