WACO — The Robert E. Lee boys had too big a hole to dig out of and were not able to gain ground Tuesday as the Red Raiders finished 11th overall at the Class 5A Region II boys golf championship at Twin Rivers Golf Course.
The Red Raiders combined for 322 and 326, two of their worst team rounds of the season. It gave Lee a total of 648.
“I think they just pushed too hard,” Lee boys coach John Taylor said. “This is a course where you have to be real patient and things didn’t go the way they were hoping, which caused them to push even harder and it got worse.”
Lee senior Austin King carded a 74 in his opening round to leave him in contention for a medalist spot, but a 78 Tuesday and 152 total ended his chances. Luke Fauss also shot a 78 Tuesday after going 76 on Monday for a 154 total. The remaining Lee scores were: Ben Shoup (85-85—170), Will Pollard (89-96—175) and Will Curtis (87-85—172).
Austin Westlake repeated as regional champion, combining to shoot 292-292—584 to win by 12 strokes over runner-up The Woodlands II (296-300—596). Both earn trips to the state golf tournament starting April 30 at Onion Creek Club Golf Course in Austin.
Receiving medalist state qualification were Alex Ivy from Austin High (69-71—140) and Stratton North of Austin Westlake (71-73—144).
Mesquite Horn’s Garrett Fey, who won the District 11-5A golf tournament as a medalist, finished with 73-76—149.
Lady Raiders Struggle On Opening Day Of Girls Regional Tournament
WACO — Robert E. Lee is in 11th place after Day 1 of the Class 5A Region II girls golf championship Tuesday at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course.
The Lady Raiders were led by Kerbey Kipp, who shot an 88. District 11-5A champion Ellen Burton, also from Lee, struggled to a 98. The remaining Lee scorers were Katy Powell (95), Erin Birdsong (99) and McCall Carlton (116) to give REL a 388 overall total.
The Woodlands I leads after the first round with a 301, followed by Austin Westlake (310) in second and Westwood (329) in third.
The top two teams and top scoring medalists not on the first and second place teams qualify for the Class 5A state golf tournament starting April 30 at Onion Creek Club Golf Course in Austin.
Cheyenne Knight of the Woodlands I and Sierra Sims of Westlake are tied for first with 72s.
The second and final round will tee off at 8 a.m. today at Cottonwood Creek.
