Robert E. Lee grabbed its first win of the season in emphatic fashion, defeating Pollok Central 10-0 Thursday at Mike Carter Field. The Red Raiders took advantage of Central errors while also providing seven hits in their victory.

It was the final game played on Day 1 of the 21st Annual Rose City Classic. Other results were: Forney 9, Hallsville 1; Sulphur Springs 5, Nacogdoches 2; Nacogdoches 6, Lee 5 in eight innings; Carthage 9, Kilgore 3; and Kilgore 10, Central 8.

Lee’s 10 runs turned out to be nine more than Daniel Bogue needed. The freshman righty tossed a complete game, allowing two hits with eight strikeouts. Trace Reed singled and scored two runs while Tanner Bandel also had a single and two runs scored.

The Red Raiders (1-2) had lost the first game of the day, 6-5, in extra innings against Nacogdoches. Against Central, Lee scored in every inning, starting with Zach Flanagan beginning things with an RBI triple in the first.

Bandel singled and scored in the second before REL blew the game open in the third. Central committed four errors in the frame, coupled with a double from Travis Miller and singles by Matt Solomon, Chad Trpkosh and Blake Hamblett drove in six runs to make it 8-0.

Lee added single runs in the fourth and fifth to complete the mercy-rule victory.

Nacogdoches 6, Lee 5 (8)

The Red Raiders rallied back from deficits in the sixth and seventh, but couldn’t do it in the eighth, succumbing 6-5 in eight innings.

Reed took the loss against Nacogdoches, allowing one run on one hit in his inning of work while Dragons reliever Nathan Harsbarger grabbed the win.

Nacogdoches scored the game-winning run in the top of the eighth after Lee had rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to extend the game. Senior Taylor Seaman started things with a one-out walk off reliever Reed. Chandler Hamilton then followed with a double that narrowly escaped Lee first baseman Chad Payne’s glove down the line.

This gave Nacogdoches (1-1) its fourth lead of the contest and Harsbarger was finally able to lock it down for the Dragons, escaping a jam in the bottom of the eighth.

Lee (0-2) rallied in its final at-bat in regulation and looked to be about to duplicate that feat in the eighth. Matt Solomon (2 for 3, RBI) delivered a one-out double to right field, but courtesy runner Hamblett was left stranded.

Lee managed five runs on seven hits, but was held scoreless until the sixth. Trailing 4-1, Reed led off the frame with a walk followed by a single from Flanagan and RBI double from Travis Miller. Flanagan scored on an error and Solomon drove in the third run with a sacrifice fly.

REL’s scoring surge cut its deficit to 4-3, but was behind 5-3 when the bottom of the seventh began.

Ross Himes started it with a leadoff single followed by a single from Douglas Kinsey. Both eventually scored on sacrifice flies with Kinsey’s run tying the game at 5-5.

With Rose City Classic rules, the game was allowed one extra inning and would end in a tie after that. Nacogdoches made sure that wasn’t needed. Hamilton finished two singles and Seaman had a single, double and scored the game-winning run.
