LONGVIEW — Robert E. Lee’s fell three points short in its quest for a postseason trip from District 11-5A basketball.
The Red Raiders led by four points late in the fourth quarter, but three baskets from Dorian Leonard and two free throws denied Lee in a 51-48 loss Friday at Lobo Coliseum.
A tip-in from Will Dougherty with nine seconds left cut REL’s deficit to one point, but after missing a steal on the in-bounds pass, the Red Raiders were forced to foul.
Longview made both free throws for a three-point edge. Lee eventually got a long-range 3-point attempt at the buzzer, but it hit off the back iron.
The loss leaves Lee 1-8 in District 11-5A and eliminates the Red Raiders from the postseason while Longview (3-6) clinches the fourth and final playoff spot.
“I think the kids played with a lot of guts tonight,” said Lee coach Alan Johnston.
Lee senior Jarrod Coleman suffered an ankle injury earlier this week, but played through it Friday to finish with nine points. Lee received double figures form Evan Tomlinson (14) and Taylor Tankersley (13) with REL making nine 3-pointers in the loss.
Lee (16-14) play its season finale Tuesday against North Mesquite on Senior Night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Lee Varsity Gym.
