MESQUITE — Robert E. Lee clinched a playoff berth with a 2-1 win over Mesquite Horn on Thursday in a District 11-5A soccer match at a wind-swept Hanby Stadium.

“After missing the playoffs last year, we wanted to get back in the (postseason),” REL coach Marty Germany said. “It was only the second time in school history Lee did not make the playoffs.”

Germany added the match was played in extreme wind conditions.

The Red Raiders had the wind to their backs in the first half and took a 1-0 lead as Tanner Tebbetts scored on an assist from Reed Pool with about two minutes left in the first half.

Lee controlled the game in the second half despite going against the wind, but an own goal tied the game with about 20 minutes remaining in the game.

But the Red Raiders battled back and scored with nine minutes left on a Giovanni Sosa left-footed goal.

Uriel Chavez supplied the pass and Lee led 2-1.

REL then played defense, led by the midfield play of Pool and the defensive play of George Martinez and Eddie Esparza.

The Red Raiders (11-5-5 overall, 4-2-2 district) do not play again until March 23 at DeSoto.
