COLUMBUS, Ga. - The No. 1 UT Tyler softball team completed a dominating weekend on Sunday by winning the Gold Bracket of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Leadoff Classic.
The Patriots (17-2) defeated No. 3 Christopher Newport (Virginia) 8-0 in the semifinals, followed by a 5-0 win over Trine (Indiana), 5-0.
In six games, UT Tyler scored 41 runs and did not allow its opponents to score.
In the win over Christopher Newport, KK Stevens, Raven Rodriguez and Jade Green all belted solo home runs, while Kaylee Prather had a triple.
Rodriguez, Stevens and Prather all had two hits. Lexi Ackroyd, Vanessa Carrizales and Jackie Mendez added singles.
Stevens had two RBIs with Rodriguez, Mendez, Green and Kristin Lopez each adding RBIs.
Kelsie Batten (10-2) tossed a three-hitter while striking out three and not walking a batter.
It was the first loss of the season for the Captains in 15 games.
In the championship game against the Thunder, Green hit another home run, while Carrizales added a blast as well.
Others adding hits for the Patriots were Ackroyd, Rodriguez and Kelsie McEachern. Carrizales had two RBIs, while Rodriguez added one. Alaina Kissinger (5-0) got the win in the circle, striking out four while not walking a batter. She gave up five hits.
The Patriots return to American Southwest Conference action on Friday, traveling to Brownwood to face Howard Payne.
