Patriots take lead at Al Jones Tournament

UT Tyler, led by Jacob Walsh’s 3-under 68, leads the Al Jones Memorial Golf Tournament after Monday’s first round at The Cascades Golf Club.

The tournament was formerly called the UT Tyler Fall Invitational.

“The name has changed to honor a friend of mine who was a long time supporter of the university and the golf team,” Patriot coach King Campbell said.

The Patriots carded a 4-over 288 to lead second place Schreiner by 11 strokes. Mary Hardin-Baylor is third at 300. UT Tyler’s Orange squad is fifth at 305. There are 15 teams entered.

The second and final round is scheduled to begin today at 8:30 a.m. today.

Walsh is tied for medalist honors with Johnathan Chen of Emory. Cheyne Kendall of Schreiner is third at 70, followed by UT Tyler Orange’s Daniel De Rozario with a 71. Jacob Clay of LeTourneau is fifth at 72.

Patriot teammates Trent Boudoin and Cody Gonzalez are tied for sixth with 73, while John Dukes, who has twice been awarded American Southwest Conference Golfer of the Week, is tied for 10th with a 74.

In the women’s tournament, Texarkana College leads with a score of 334, followed by UT Tyler at 337 and Schreiner at 338.

There’s a tie for the individual lead between LeTourneau’s Candice Nishimura and Schreiner’s Sarah Stillwell. Each shot 79. Centenary’s Justine Kemp is third at 81.

Katie Crawford, who is tied for fourth, led the Patriots with an 82. Teammate Taylor Sloane is also in the top 10 with an 84. She is tied for ninth.

Other UT Tyler scores were: Callie Rice (85), Danica Weddle (86) and Jordan Sloane (88). Other Patriots competing individually are Marina Rhodes (tied for ninth with an 84), Ceseli Slovacek (90) and Alissa Moe (98).
