RICHARDSON — UT Tyler rallied from four-runs down and then held on for a 9-8 win over UT Dallas and a sweep of the Comets on Thursday in an American Southwest Conference softball doubleheader.

The No. 2 Patriots (4-0) won the first game 10-1 in six innings as Heather Abshire tossed a three-hitter and Katelyn Thomason drove in five runs and added three hits.

UT Tyler returns home on Sunday to face Southwestern at UT Tyler Ballpark. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

Game One

Abshire, a transfer from LSU-Eunice, kept the Comets under control. She had two strikeouts.

Thomason had a triple and two singles. Carli Wheeler had two hits, including a triple, with two RBIs.

Others adding hits for UT Tyler were Lauren Robenalt, Ashley Endsley and Ashlee Johnson. Taylor Petrick added an RBI for the Patriots.

Game Two

The Patriots fell behind 4-0 and 6-2 before rallying.

Petrick paced the Patriots with two hits and four RBIs, while Carli Wheeler, Ashley Endsley and Rachel Howell had two hits each.

Joey Cronin, Abshire, Brittany Hay and Johnson each had a hit.

UT Tyler scored four runs in the fifth inning to tie the game at 6-6.

Petrick had a key two-run single in the inning.

The Patriots went up 9-6 in the seventh as Cronin singled to open the inning and made it to third on Endsley’s double to center. Cronin and pinch-runner Amanda Lopez scored on Petrick’s single. Abshire then doubled to plate Petrick and the 9-6 lead.

The Comets scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull within 9-8, but Abshire came in and got the final three outs for the save.

UT Tyler Baseball Set To Face Concordia-Texas

The UT Tyler baseball team, currently riding a six-game winning streak, begins a three-game series today with defending American Southwest Conference champion Concordia-Texas.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. from Irwin Field. The series concludes with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Patriots (7-1) will not return home until March 16 against UT Dallas.

In its current winning streak, UT Tyler is outscoring the opposition 63-20.

Prior to the Patriots’ 14-4 win over Castleton State on Tuesday, senior catcher Hayden Chick was leading the team in hitting at .522 with a home run and seven RBIs.

Chase Willard and Jack Barkley lead the pitching staff, combining to go 3-1 with a 3.04 ERA in four starts. 

Concordia enters with a 9-2 record, having won three of four last week at the Arizona Desert Classic. 

The Tornadoes are coached by former major league pitcher Tommy Boggs, who played for both the Texas Rangers and Atlanta Braves during his 10-year big-league career from 1976-1985.
