Battling blustery winds and slick greens, the UT Tyler golfers played like the conditions were absolutely perfect on Monday.

Both Patriot teams are leading their own tournament after Monday’s play at The Cascades Golf Tournament.

The second and final round of the Al Jones Memorial Golf Tournament is today, beginning about 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.

“Both our men’s and women’s teams played well,” UT Tyler coach King Campbell said. “It was windy and the greens were faster than we have ever seen them. Both our first and second units played outstanding. It was an awesome way to start.

“We are so fortunate the weather changed. … This is the only course we could have played today after we received five inches of rain yesterday. The course was immaculate. My hat’s off to the Cascades staff.”

The Patriot men combined for a sterling 292, 12 strokes ahead of second-place Mary Hardin-Baylor (304). Mississippi College is next at 305, while UT Tyler Orange is tied for fourth with Trinity University at 306.

Individually, UT Tyler’s John Dukes and Dayton Cargill are tied with MC’s Jimmy Ellis for first. They all shot 72.

In the women’s division, the Patriots are on top with a 324, followed by Tyler Junior College at 326. UT Tyler Orange is third at 329.

Patriot Laura Lindsey carded a 76 to lead the field. She is two strokes ahead of TJC’s Alexandria Martinez.
