SEGUIN - The UT Tyler men’s basketball team opened its season with an 83-67 nonconference loss to Texas Lutheran on Sunday at Memorial Gymnasium.

The Patriots (0-1) were within three of the Bulldogs (1-0) with the score at 62-59 on a pair of Joey Cuervo free throws with 4:47 remaining, but TLU went on a 12-3 run to pull away and earn the home win.

Anthony Gonzales led the Patriots with 16 points after hitting four shots from the field and going 8 for -9 from the free throw line, while Cuervo added 11 points with a game-high three 3-pointers. The two returners were the only two double-figure scorers with Deon Rodgers leading the newcomers with nine point on a 4 for 6 shooting performance. UT Tyler finished the game 16 for 21 from the free throw line with Latigo Collins going 4 for -4 and scoring six points.

The Patriots will return to action at 7 p.m. on Monday with an exhibition game against Texas State at the Strahan Coliseum in San Marcos before playing at Southwestern on Saturday in their next official game.

UT Tyler hosts its first game on Tuesday, Nov. 24 against Rust College at the Herrington Patriot Center.
