RICHARDSON — The UT Tyler women’s soccer team took an early lead on No. 1 seed Hardin-Simmons in the American Southwest Conference soccer tournament on Friday, but could not hold the lead, falling 2-1.
The loss drops the Patriots to 12-6 overall on the year.
The Patriots struck first in the matchup of the two heavyweights, when Chestley Strother found the back of the net to give UT Tyler the 1-0 lead in the eighth minute.
Hardin-Simmons (14-1-1) equalized in the 40th minute on a Julianne Kucera goal to the top of the target, making the score 1-1 at the half.
After nearly 41 minutes of scoreless, hard-fought soccer, the Cowgirls’ Katie Haltiwagner scored the dagger from the top of the box, beating goalie Macy Hurley for the 2-1 lead.
Patriots’ senior Kat Haag had one last effort in the final seconds of play, but the shot was high.
This is the second-straight season UT Tyler has been knocked out of the ASC championship tournament by HSU, including last season’s loss in the championship final.
Strother finished the tournament with two goals-scored, while Hurley finished two matches with 13 saves total. H-S will play host UT Dallas in the final at 1 p.m. Sunday.
The Comets scored a 1-0 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor in the other semifinal.
