AUSTIN — Five Robert E. Lee swimmers went to Austin on Friday intent on making some history.

Two still have that chance.

Senior Meredith Oliver and senior Sam Lewis posted strong times in their individual prelims Friday afternoon at the Class 5A Swimming and Diving Championships at Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center.

Lewis, who will soon be swimming at this venue as a member of the Texas men’s team, turned in the sixth best prelim time in the 200 freestyle and the third best in 500 freestyle. Only top eight prelim times advance to the finals while the rest swim in the consolation round.

Oliver, who finished fourth at state last year, posted the second-best qualifying time in the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle. The Texas A&M signee broke a school record with her 200 freestyle time of 1:48.33.

Michael Quam finished 13th in prelims in his event while the boys 400 freestyle relay team of Quam, Lewis, Jack Oliver and Stephan Umierski was 12th.

The finals and consolation finals will take place at 3 p.m. today.

“All in all, we set ourselves up well for tomorrow,” said Lee coach Matt Franks, whose team is trying to win its first state swimming medals since 1991. “It could be an historic day.”
