Freshman Sky'lynn Holmes made a smashing debut as a Tyler Junior College Apache Lady.

The 6-2 post from Pine Tree scored 24 points and grabbed 23 rebounds as the No. 10 Apache Ladies opened their basketball season with a 72-60 win over Dallas Crest, a group of former collegiate players, on Tuesday at Wagstaff Gymnasium.

"This was a good challenge to open the season," TJC coach Trenia Tillis-Jones said. "They are a very smart and talented team.

"Sky'lynn played well. We have been working with her. We have so many freshmen. We still have a lot of work to do."

It was also the first game with new rules for the women's game, mainly four quarters instead of two halves.

TJC led the whole game but DC got within 45-44 in the third quarter before the Apache Ladies scored nine straight points.

Autumn Avina, a sophomore guard from Round Rock who missed all of last season with an injury, also was in double figures with 12 points.

Jasmine Williams, a freshman forward from Fort Worth, added 10 rebounds and two blocks. To'Lisha Weasah, a freshman from Dallas, and Taudenciah Oluoch, a sophomore from Nairobi, Kenya, each had seven boards.

ShaQueena Thomas, a 6-1 forward who played at Sam Houston State University, led Crest with 13 points, while Cierra York, who played at Livingston College, added 12 points. Former Seton Hall player Jaleesa Beverly, scored 10 points. Layla McCray, of Oklahoma Baptist, had nine rebounds and six blocks.

Former UT Tyler standout guard Danai Woods had five points for the Dallas squad.

The Apache Ladies return to action on Saturday, traveling to Bossier City, Louisiana, for a game with Baton Rouge Community College at Bossier Parish Community College. The contest has a 2 p.m. tipoff.

TJC will return home on Nov. 13 to host its annual Staybridge Suites Classic. The Apache Ladies will face Arkansas Baptist at 7 p.m. On Nov. 14 they will play Hill College at 6 p.m. Other teams competing include Jacksonville College, Collin County, Panola, Cisco and Kilgore.

The Dallas Crest is a subsidiary of the Dallas Diesel Basketball Club, Inc., aimed at providing a stable and competitive basketball environment for post collegiate female players.
