Robert E. Lee senior Kylie Reynaud captured top honors last week by winning a girls’ singles title at the Tyler Lee Spring Tournament without dropping a set. Reynaud’s was one of many strong performances by Lee at its annual tournament.
Reynaud began her march by defeating Grace Community’s Rebekah Bentley and Longview’s Varya Ignatchenko in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. She met a player from Beaumont West Brook in the semifinals, and although she dropped three games, still won in straight sets (6-0, 6-3).
That moved Reynaud into the championship against Pine Tree’s Shelby Hart, who Reynaud downed in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2.
In boys doubles, Lee’s Henry Schmoker and Rahil Doctor finished third overall. The duo advanced to the semifinals with wins over teams Pine Tree’s Hurley/Estes (6-1, 6-0) and Jacksonville’s Smith/Perry (6-0, 6-0). In the semifinals, Schmoker/Doctor lost in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, to Jason Abante/Trey Crysel from Beaumont West Brook.
That set up an all-Lee third-place match with Schmoker/Doctor defeating Mason Berry and Robby Hill in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
In mixed doubles, the team of Catherine Butschi and Preston White finished third overall by posting wins over Young/Lovern from Garland Sachse (6-2, 6-0) and Smith/Parrish of Whitehouse (6-2, 6-4). Butschi and White were stopped in the semifinals by Phaff/Kral from Longview. The team rallied to win the third-place match.
Lee will next be in action at the Beachcomber Tournament, which is scheduled for March 22-24 in Galveston.
