LUFKIN — Robert E. Lee’s Brooke Johnston keeps scoring and the Lady Raiders keep benefiting.
The junior forward grabbed the only goal Tuesday on a pass from Abby Halbrook to give Lee a 1-0 win over Lufkin. The victory raises Lee’s record to 3-2-1 after beginning the season 0-2. Johnston has now scored four goals in Lee’s six games.
“Lufkin played hard and we found a way to win even though we didn’t play our best,” said Lee coach Chris Woodard.
The Lee boys game against Mount Pleasant Tuesday was cancelled because of rain.
The Lady Raiders will next take part in the Longview Tournamnent beginning Thursday while the Lee boys compete in the Marshall Tournament, also starting Thursday.
John Tyler, 2-1
Lufkin scored on a free kick with about three minutes left to lift the Panthers to a 2-1 victory over John Tyler on Tuesday at the Lions’ soccer field.
All scoring was in the second half. Lufkin went on top 1-0 before JT tied it about 10 minutes later on a goal by Abner Barrea.
Barrea scored when Lufkin failed to clear the ball and the JT standout blast the ball off the post to score. Barrea had a penalty kick with five minutes left in the match, but missed the mark.
Lufkin then used a free kick on top of the box to score. JT coach Howard Storey said he had to substitute the backup goalkeeper after the starter received a yellow card.
“I would have been upset if we had played badly and lost, but we played well, especially in the second half,” Storey said while complimenting the Panther team.
JT outshot Lufkin, 7-4.
The Lions (3-3) will take part in the Lufkin Tournament beginning on Thursday. JT plays Willis at 3 p.m.
