OKLAHOMA CITY — Texas College split two volleyball matches Thursday in its first action of the season.

The Lady Steers lost in three games to Mid American Christian (25-9, 25-19, 25-19) then bounced back to beat Southwestern Christian (17-25, 17-25, 25-15, 27-25, 15-12).

Leaders for the Lady Steers against Mid-American Christian included: Sherri Darden (four kills), Jerrica Jenkins (three kills), Denise Duplechin (seven assists, one ace), Kerryona Green (five digs), Whitney Keys (five digs), Patricia Patterson (five digs) and Jour’Dan Gardner (one block).

The Lady Steers bounced back after dropping their first two games to beat Southwestern Christian.

Darden, Jenkins and Gardner totaled nine kills each in the victory. Duplechin passed for 28 assists with four aces. Tiffany Williams added four aces, Green contributed 13 digs and Amber Girdy chipped with 10 digs.

Darden and Jenkins combined for 11 blocks.

“I saw progress from the first set against MACU to the final set against SWCU,” Lady Steers coach Russeal Wortham said. “I felt they really played together to get the win against SWC after being down two sets.”

The Lady Steers return to action Saturday at the University of St. Thomas tournament in Houston.


The Steers football team plays at Incarnate Word on Saturday. The contest is set for a 7 p.m. start at Benson Stadium in San Antonio. The Steers are coming off a 46-10 loss to sixth-ranked Saint Francis (Ind.).

Incarnate Word, a member of NCAA Division II, is playing its season opener. The Cardinals finished 2-8 last year.
