A young Robert E. Lee girls soccer team gave coach Chris Woodard what he called “one of our best wins” Friday as the Lady Raiders held down No. 4 Waco Midway to win 1-0 at Lee Soccer Field.

The Lady Raiders used a goal from junior Brooke Johnston and stellar goalkeeping by senior Allie Telscher.

“I’ve had a lot of teams over the years, but I am very proud of how the girls did,” Woodard said. “Considering we only had three returners from last year, they worked real hard and they are getting better faster and they played great tonight.”

Lee raised its overall record to 2-2-1 while dealing Class 4A Waco Midway (3-1-1) its first loss.

The game was scoreless at halftime, due in large part to Telscher and Lee’s back line soaking up constant pressure from Midway on corner kicks and long throw-ins.

“They had a girl who is one of the best players I’ve seen with long throw-ins,” Woodard said. “They had seven corners to our four, but when you add the long throw-ins, which are (just like a corner kick), it was probably double digits.”

Woodard said Lee’s back line of sophomore Ariel Howells, freshman Mallory Curtis and senior Lindsey Roberts stood tall.

In the end it was a pass from Julia Harrison that sent Johnston through on a breakaway and the junior provided the clinical finish to net her third goal of the season.

Lee will next face Lufkin at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Lufkin Soccer Complex.

Red Raiders Blank Red Oak

LONGVIEW — Robert E. Lee continued its goal-scoring form Friday afternoon by defeating Red Oak 2-0 in their game at Lobo Stadium.

The Red Raiders scored once in the first half and once in the second half to run their record to 2-1-3, their lone loss a 2-1 setback against Athens.

Lee used a dynamic free kick from Michael Wilkens, who fired in his shot from 40 yards out after George Martinez was brought down for the foul.

The Red Raiders doubled their lead 10 minutes into the second half, and again it was Martinez’s free-kick specialty that beat Red Oak. This time his swirling kick found its way to Tanner Tebbetts in the box, who volleyed home his fourth goal of the season.

Lee coach Marty Germany credited a strong defensive effort by Martinez, Wilkens, Eddie Esparza, Alexis Chaves and goalkeeper Henry Plancarte.

REL closes out play at 11 a.m. today against Mount Pleasant at the Longview Soccer Complex.
