Robert E. Lee junior Ciara Johnson did a little bit of everything Friday for the Lady Raiders.
Johnson scored 20 points to go along with 12 rebounds, six steals, four blocks and two assists in a 60-21 win over North Mesquite.
The victory raised REL’s record to 22-7 overall and 5-2 in District 11-5A which keeps the Lady Raiders tied for second in the league standings.
“We couldn’t afford to lose another game,” said Johnson, who scored two points under her season average, but admits she will take that with a victory.
“Bre was hurt and I tried to take up her slack and mine. She did an awesome job (playing with pain). She didn’t quit.”
Brooks, the team’s starting point guard, started and played the entire game despite an ankle injury as Lee coach Lloyd Mahaffey continually subbed her in and out trying to limit her time on defense.
“I was trying to keep her off the defensive end and let her work her magic on offense.” said Mahaffey about Brooks, who finished with 12 points and seven assists.
“We let her play about half (the game) that way.”
Along with Bre Brooks, freshman guard Tree Brooks filled up the stat sheet with 11 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals.
The Lady Raiders led from start to finish as North Mesquite (5-22, 0-6) went long stretches without scoring a point. All told, the Lady Stallions made just 4 of 40 shot attempts (10 percent).
Mahaffey believes his team’s defense had something to do with that.
“I was so proud of them; they played so hard on defense tonight,” Mahaffey said. “That was one of the better defensive games we’ve had, and we’ll just build on that.”
North Mesquite was led in the loss by eight points from Rachael Malone.
Lee began the game with six straight points, started by a 3-pointer from Bre Brooks. She added another trey midway through the first, along with baskets by Johnson and Tree Brooks to give REL a 17-4 lead after one.
REL continued to dominate in the second period with a 6-1 surge to push out to a 23-6 score. North Mesquite responded with its most consistent offense of the game, outscoring Lee 8-2 to cut its deficit to 25-14.
The Lady Stallions scored two points the rest of the half as Lee led 30-16 at halftime.
The Lady Raiders broke it open in the second half with a 16-0 run in the third period. Lee led 50-18 entering the fourth before Mahaffey dialed things back a little in the fourth while resting Bre Brooks and Johnson.
Lee next faces Mesquite Horn with the winner taking a big step toward securing a second-place finish in the league standings. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Varsity Gym.

District 11-5A Boys
North Mesquite 52, Robert E. Lee 48
MESQUITE — Robert E. Lee senior Jarrod Coleman scored 20 points, but it wasn’t enough to rally the Red Raiders back from a 25-15 halftime deficit, eventually succumbing 52-48 Friday at North Mesquite.
The Red Raiders received 12 points from Taylor Tankersley while North Mesquite was paced by 14 from Darik Walker.
“We scored 24 points in the fourth period after only scoring 24 until then,” said Lee coach Alan Johnston. “I was disappointed that we didn’t come out to play in such a big ball game. We came out flat.”
The loss drops Lee to 1-4 in District 11-5A while North Mesquite is now 2-3.
