The UT Tyler men’s and women’s basketball teams each ended a two-game road trip with losses to Howard Payne on Saturday night.
The men’s team dropped their fifth American Southwest Conference game of the year, losing 67-60 to the Yellow Jackets.
The women’s squad fell, 85-69, despite leading by one at halftime. Lindsey Hausmann led UT Tyler for the third straight game in scoring, recording 19 points for the Patriots.
Howard Payne took the lead with 19:22 left in the second half and never relinquished it. The Patriots trailed by four with 14 minutes to play, but two quick threes by the Yellow Jackets made it a 10-point game.
From that point, Howard Payne never led by less than six. The Yellow Jackets built a 21-point lead on an 18-5 run with four minutes left and closed out the contest for their fifth win of the season.
Jasmin Thomas led Howard Payne with 19 points. Roshonda Gayden followed with 16 points and six rebounds.
Afritina Anderson posted 14 points and seven rebounds for UT Tyler. Melissa Thomas recorded a game-high nine rebounds, along with 11 points.
The Yellow Jackets came out firing in the second half and extended their lead to 12, but the hot hand of Larry Carpenter brought the Patriots back. Carpenter hit three 3-point shots in a span of four minutes to tie the game at 50 with 7:47 to play.
Howard Payne took back the lead on a pair of free throws by Gabriel Garza on the Yellow Jackets’ next possession. HPU held the lead for the remainder of the contest and evened their season at 4-4.
Brandon Levine led the Patriots with 20 points on the night. Carpenter followed with 11 points.
Garza and Joshua Dada led HPU with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Garza also led the Yellow Jackets with eight rebounds.
Both UT Tyler teams return home Friday to continue ASC play against LeTourneau University. The women’s team begin the night, with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
