On a chilly Sunday afternoon, the Tyler Junior College baseball team added a pair of wins to its résumé by sweep Ranger College at Mike Carter Field.
TJC won 5-4 in 14 innings and 5-1. The wins improve the Apaches to 11-6 on the season.
TJC returns to play today, hosting Angelina College in a doubleheader at Mike Carter. The first game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
The Apaches began with by continuing a game that originally began in Ranger on Wednesday. The game was tied at 4-4 after 10 innings inning when umpires suspended the game due to darkness.
Play resumed at Mike Carter Field beginning in the top of the 11th. The Rangers were the first to put a runner on the base paths after an error placed Dayfran Ortiz aboard in the bottom of the 11th. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. However, Eric Polivka and the TJC defense recorded two outs in a row to end the threat.
The Rangers threatened again in the bottom of the 13th but it was TJC who pulled ahead in the 14th.
Tyler Gaines opened the frame with an infield single and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.
With two outs, Justin Monsour singled to left scoring Gaines to put the score at 5-4.
The Apaches added two more infield singles to load the bases. However, a strikeout ended the top half. It was a three-up, three-down for Ranger College in the bottom half of the inning with a strikeout, ground out and fly out to seal the win for TJC.
In the second game, TJC jumped on defensive errors by Ranger College which allowed the Apaches to put runs on the scoreboard early on.
In the first inning, Tim Hunter got aboard due to catcher’s interference. Zane Otten made it to first with an infield single.
The pair pulled off a double steal before Justin Monsour drew a walk to load the bases for Anthony Soriano.
Soriano doubled to right field which scored Hunter and Otten putting TJC up 2-0. However, the Rangers sat down the next three Apaches to end the threat.
TJC’s offense came alive in the bottom of the fourth with Brandon Webb leading off with a double to left field.
He moved to third on a sac bunt before Eric Stegent was hit with a pitch and Travis Johnson drew a walk to load the bases.
Manny Galvan followed with a walk which scored one run and a single by Hunter plated a pair to give the Apaches a 5-0 lead.
The Rangers’ lone run of the game came in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Michael Milner drew the walk and two wild pitches put him on third base. A single by Brandon Garrett scored Milner making it 5-1 before a strikeout ended the inning.
