The Tyler Junior College Apaches returned from Christmas break in fine form, scoring a 97-53 victory over Houston Community College-Southwest on Tuesday at Wagstaff Gymnasium.

For the first time, TJC basketball coach Mike Marquis scheduled his team to play during the annual Wagstaff Holiday Classic. The idea proved to be a big hit with area basketball fans and players.

John Paul, a 6-11 transfer from Salt Lake Community College who is originally from Saint Lucia, made a memorable debut for the Apaches, scoring 21 points and grabbing six rebounds.

The Apaches (12-1) were also led by Dale Jones’ double-double as the 6-8 sophomore from Waterloo, Iowa had 16 points and 10 boards.

Aaron Williams led Houston CC with 11 points.

The Apaches return to Region XIV play on Saturday, hosting Angelina College at Wagstaff Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m.

The No. 9-ranked Apache Ladies meet the Texas Storm at 5 p.m. on Friday and Dallas Quest at noon on Saturday. Both games are at Masters Gymnasium on the KC campus.
