Apaches denied by Southwestern Christian, 106-102

Southwestern Christian College rallied in the second half to down Tyler Junior College 106-102 on Saturday afternoon during the second day of the Jimmy Butler Basketball Classic at Wagstaff Gymnasium.

The Classic is named for the former Apache and current Chicago Bull.

TJC led 56-42 at halftime, but the veteran Rams team came back against the young Apaches. TJC point guard Todd Eaglin led the Apaches with 28 points.

Also in double figures for the Apaches were Vamba Donzo with 17, followed by Tyler Miller (13), Faith Pope (11) and Dominique Shaw (10). Trevor Matthews led the Rams with 35 points, including eight 3-pointers.

In the first game, Brookhaven College downed CYM Academy 113-77. The Apaches return to play on Friday in Kilgore Classic. TJC will meet Lone Star College-Tomball at 5 p.m.

APACHE LADIES OPEN SEASON WITH WIN

BEEVILLE — Newcomer Malena Washington hit for 22 points and returnee Shernise Robinson added 20 as the Tyler Junior College Apache Ladies opened their basketball season with a 114-46 win over Coastal Bend Saturday afternoon. Other newcomers — Katelynn Johnson (16), Jasmine Prophet (15) and Chelsi Watson (11) — were also in double figures.

Veteran Bria Emanuel added 11. TJC’s home opener is 5:30 p.m. Monday against Cisco at Wagstaff Gymnasium.
