Apache Ladies lead NJCAA tennis tournament


TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 1-ranked Apache Ladies remained unbeaten and lead after the third round on Tuesday of the NJCAA Division I Women’s Tennis Tournament at the Reffkin Tennis Center.

TJC leads with 36 points, followed by defending national champion ASA Miami at 35. They are followed by Seward County (Kansas) (29.5), St. Petersburg (Florida) (28.5) and Broward (Florida) (27.5).

The TJC singles players taking wins were:

Flight 1: freshman Jasmine Asghar def. Satoni Momose, St. Petersburg, 6-4, 7-6 (5);

Flight 2: freshman Kalani Soli def. Augustina Acuna, Abraham Baldwin (Georgia), 6-1, 6-3;

Flight 3: sophomore Montana Moore def. Kiah Turner, Broward, 7-5, 6-2;

Flight 4: freshman Oceane Garibal def. Olivia Sharpton, Snead State (Alabama), 6-0, 6-0;

Flight 5: freshman Yuna Ito def. Cassandra Ruiz, St. Petersburg, 6-0, 6-1;

Flight 6: sophomore Elena Tendero def. Michelle Fournier, Mesa (Arizona), 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles TJC went 3-0:

Flight 1: Asghar-Ito def. Seward County’s Thalita Rodrigues-Lisa Suzuki, 6-2, 6-2;

Flight 2: Moore-Soli def. Collin College’s Hannah Rey-Jayme Waites, 6-4, 6-2;

Flight 3: Garibal-Michelle Walker def. St. Petersburg’s Ruiz-Monica Diaz, 6-1, 6-0.

TJC has won 17 women’s national championships, including four straight from 2010 to 2013.

The tournament continues through Thursday.
