Host Tyler Junior College and seven other Texas teams are vying for a trip to the nationals as the Region XIV Volleyball Tournament begins today at Wagstaff Gymnasium.

Two berths to the national tournament will be on the line.

Of the eight teams entered, five are ranked in the top 20 of the NJCAA poll, led by No. 1 Blinn (34-3) and No. 2 Tyler (28-2). Also rated are No. 11 Paris (27-6), No. 13 San Jacinto (20-8) and No. 19 Trinity Valley (19-13).

The national tournament is scheduled for Nov. 21-23 in Casper, Wyo.

TJC opens play at 3 p.m. today against Wharton. If the Apache Ladies win they will play at 11 a.m. Saturday; a loss would mean playing at 7 p.m. Friday.

The first match today has Paris vs. Laredo at 9 a.m., followed by San Jacinto vs. Trinity Valley (11 a.m.) and Blinn vs. Panola (1 p.m.). There will be elimination matches at 5 and 7 p.m. on Friday.

The championship match is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday.

A tournament pass is $15 (adults only). Day passes are $6 for adults, $3 for students with ID and children under 18 are free.

KILGORE — The Tyler Junior College Apaches basketball team will play in the Kilgore Classic today and Saturday at Masters Gym in Kilgore.

TJC (1-1) plays Lone Star-Tomball at 5 p.m. Kilgore will play Cedar Valley College at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, the Apaches will meet Cedar Valley at 3 p.m. KC plays at Lone Star-Tomball at 5 p.m.

The Apache Ladies are off this weekend and return to play at 6 p.m. Thursday against Arkansas State at Wagstaff Gymnasium.


ATHENS — The No. 8 Trinity Valley Community College Cardinals and the No. 13 Navarro College Bulldogs will play in the Southwest Junior College Football Conference football championship on Saturday at Bruce Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
