ROYSE CITY — Paris senior Jake Clark delivered a two-run homer and complete-game performance in a 4-1 win over Chapel Hill on Friday in Game 1 of their best-of-three Class 3A area playoff series.

Clark finished with 13 strikeouts and allowed one run on five hits. Chapel Hill was held scoreless until the Bulldogs strung together three straight singles with one out in the sixth.

Chapel Hill's Braden Nelson also went the distance, allowing four runs on eight hits with two walks and nine strikeouts.

The loss means for the second week in a row the Bulldogs (20-12) are faced with the task of having to sweep Saturday's doubleheader to prolong their season.

Game 2 is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Royse City with Game 3, if necessary, slated to start 30 minutes after the completion of Game 2.

Despite what's at stake, Chapel Hill coach Ryan Cook said a confident team will step off the bus for Game 2.

"That couldn't have been a better loss for us because momentum was on our side in the sixth and seventh," Cook said. "After the home run (gave them a 4-0 lead) it seemed like they kind of relaxed.

"I am going to turn it over to Pat Day tomorrow. He's always pitched well when his back is against the wall. And Andrew Black will want it right after him."

Day enters with a 1.69 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 49 1-3 innings while Black sports a 1.00 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 35 innings.

Paris (18-13) scored two runs in the first inning, one of them unearned, as the Wildcats took advantage of a dropped line drive by Chapel Hill's outfielder to score a run on a sacrifice fly from Jordan Williams and two-out RBI double by Drew Helberg.

Clark made it 4-0 with one swing in the fifth, launching an opposite-field, two-run homer that was a no-doubter.

Chapel Hill could not get a base runner past second against Clark before the sixth inning. Zack Walters reached on an infield single with one out and Day delivered a perfect bunt to reach on a single. Peyton Richardson followed with a line-drive single to left-centerfield that scored Walters.

Chapel Hill eventually put runners at second and third, but Clark struck out the next two batters to end the threat. The Bulldogs got the bat on the ball in the seventh with Andrew Black drawing a one-out walk, but two flyouts and a groundout ended the game.
