ROYSE CITY — Quarterback Andrew Black and Chapel Hill shook off a slow start to rush for 486 yards in a 38-14 victory over Crandall in a Class 3A Division I Region II area football playoff on Friday at Royse City ISD Stadium.

Chapel Hill (8-4) advanced to face Decatur (9-3) at 7:30 p.m. next Friday at Forney's City Bank Stadium.

The Bulldogs recorded just 21 yards of offense and no first downs on three first-quarter possessions on a rain-soaked field.

Black, who passed for more than 2,200 yards and 23 touchdowns this season, dismissed the passing game and ran all over the Pirate defense. Black rushed for 216 yards and three touchdowns on 14 attempts.

Chapel Hill exploded for 221 second-quarter rushing yards and 22 points, scoring on all three possessions of the quarter.

Wesley Thompson, who gained 107 yards on 17 carries, started the scoring with an 8-yard burst up the middle to cap a five-play, 58-yard drive. The next drive took only one play with Black going off-tackle to the right, breaking back across the field to the left and going 85 yards for a 14-0 lead.

Crandall (5-6) responded with Nate Banks' 80-yard run on the next play from scrimmage to pull within 14-7 with 5:41 remaining in the half.

Black responded by leading the Bulldogs back down the field for another touchdown drive, running wide open to the left side on a bootleg for a 4-yard score. His conversion pass to Lex Heckel after a botched snap gave Chapel Hill a 22-7 lead.

The Pirates, who finished with 341 rushing yards, got right back into the game on the first snap of the second half as Banks broke another long run, this one for 75 yards to pull Crandall within 22-14.

Banks finished with 255 yards on just 18 carries for Crandall.

Black then put the game back out of reach as he took the ensuing snap 53 yards, breaking another four tackles along the way for a touchdown to give the Bulldogs a 30-14 lead.

Ja'Braylon Franklin closed the scoring with a 6-yard run one possession later and finished with 76 yards on seven carries. Thompson finished with 107 yards on 17 carries.
