BULLARD — Chapel Hill and Kaufman punched their tickets to the Fox Sports Southwest 7-on-7 Division II state championships in College Station in July.
Eight teams were represented in the qualifying tournament with pool games played at Panther Stadium and Bullard Middle School on a hot Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs fought through Pool 2 play undefeated, posting a 53-6 win over Bishop Gorman and beating Kaufman 32-7. The third round game was an exciting 26-21 win over Gilmer to put the Bulldogs into the semifinals.
Shelbyville won Pool 1 and Canton was the runner-up to make the semifinals. Shelbyville bested Bullard 52-14 and Canton 25-20 before beating Frankston 42-28 to clinch pool play.
The semifinal was a different story, however, with Kaufman, the Pool 2 runner-up, scoring the 42-13 win over Shelbyville to set up the all-Pool 2 finale.
Chapel Hill took down Canton 41-6 in the other semifinal.
The Bulldogs fought through the heat and the full slate of games with a 7-0 win over Kaufman to take the title, with both teams advancing to the state playoffs.
The host team Bullard fell in the opening game to Shelbyville but bounced back to squeak by Frankston 26-25. The Panthers, however, lost in the third game in a thriller, 48-47 to Canton, to end their day.
