The daughter of a former Tyler city councilman and high school principal, John Tyler senior Breanna Choice valued education from an early age.
Choice learned about her love of volleyball later, and now ranks as a key performer for a team still alive for a District 16-4A championship.
"I didn't care for it at first," said Choice, who did not play volleyball in middle school. "The more I learned, the more I came to love it."
Her mother, Vanessa Choice, served as JT's head principal shortly before Breanna arrived in high school, close to the time her father Derrick Choice Sr., completed his six-year term limit as District 3 councilman. Mrs. Choice coached volleyball before holding the title as JT principal from 2007-09.
Choice's older brother, Derrick Choice Jr., recently enjoyed a stint in the NFL playing linebacker with the St. Louis Rams. He returned to Stephen F. Austin to finish his degree in criminal justice.
The youngest of three children (including older sister Melanie), Breanna wants to make a name for herself — at the net and in the classroom — where she ranks No. 43 in the senior class.
"People know me as Mrs. Choice's daughter," Choice said. "I want to be known by more. I'm hoping volleyball can take me to a higher level."
On the court, Choice concentrates on shoring up the middle and slowing opposing attackers.
"My job is mainly to block and be able to move the ball around and adjust to whatever comes," said the 5-10 middle blocker.
With defense her main role, Choice relishes offense.
"My favorite part is hitting and the after-effect of the kill," Choice said. "The adrenaline rises and gets higher and higher. When I get a kill, it motivates me to get another."
The chance to finish first in district motivates Choice and teammates even more. JT (7-1 in 16-4A) trails Lindale (8-0) by one loss with two matches remaining in the regular season. The teams meet in a showdown today.
"We want to win district and get past the first round," Choice said. "That's our main goal as of now."
