ARP — Coming into tonight’s matchup, one of these teams would finally get a win and one of these teams would surprisingly move to 0-3.
It would be Arp.
A couple quick-strike touchdowns enabled Arp to stay out in front and finally notch its first win, 47-27.
Elysian Fields took the opening kickoff and put together what appeared to be a nice drive that eventually played out when the Yellow Jackets could not convert on fourth down.
Arp, however, was pinned deep in its own territory, which only padded the stats page. On the second play, Marcalas Johnson took the ball deep in his pistol formation set darted to the right, sprung from the pack and outraced the would-be tacklers for an 84 yard touchdown.
On their second possession, again the Yellow Jackets put together a nice seven play drive, choosing to punt and pin the Tigers back again.
This time, Arp proved more efficient than a two-play drive, using one pass play from Chase Bonner to Thomas Reese who showed off impressive speed on the 87 yard reception and Arp was up 12-0 with less than six minutes gone.
Scoring slowed some for both teams, who traded turnovers through the air or on downs for most of the remaining first and second quarters until Elysian Fields got on the board themselves with a Brevin Manning 3-yard reception from Logan Hughes with 8:23 remaining in the second period. That capped an eight play drive that began on the Yellow Jackets 19 yard line.
Arp answered the Yellow Jackets score and raised them one with Marcalas Johnson adding another rushing TD as well as Jakeithon Medlock catching a bullet from backup QB Justin Johnson.
Logan Hughes tried to keep the Yellow Jackets in it, adding a 3 yard run with 15 seconds remaining before half, but Arp already had a commanding lead by that point.
It was more of the same in the second half, but Arp’s backup QB, Justin Johnson, could have shown enough to be the “lead man” going forward. He added another TD pass of 15 yards to Reese as well as a 10-yard QB keeper to cap the win.
Arp (1-2) gets its first win, and now prepares to travel up Hwy 135 to take on Troup next Friday.
Elysian Fields falls to 0-3 and will take a week off before beginning district play hosting Linden-Kildaire in two weeks.
