The Tyler Junior College soccer team has to travel 299 miles to get to Tyler.

Say what?

The Apaches, ranked No. 3 in the nation, travel to Raymond, Miss., today to face Hinds (Miss.) Community College in a South District semifinal match. The winner receives a berth in the national tournament, which is being played at Pat Hartley Soccer Complex on the TJC campus.

The national tournament is Nov. 18-23.

For the Apaches to participate on their home turf, they must first travel to Mississippi.

The playoff game is scheduled for 6 p.m. today at Tom Shepherd Field. TJC, the defending national champion, is 15-2 on the season and the Region XIV champion for the fifth straight year. The Eagles (7-8-4) are the Region XXIII runners-up.

The other South District semifinal has Pearl River hosting San Jacinto at 6 p.m. Friday in Poplarville, Miss. Pearl River was champion of Region XXIII, while the Coyotes were runner-up to TJC.

The district semifinal winners will not play a district final as both teams will advance to the national tournament.
